Monaghan woman honoured for decades of work breeding cattle

IFAC Client, Mrs Mary Rafferty from Mullabrack-Scott, Monaghan was presented with the Holstein Fresian Association Award at the 14th Annual National Hall Of Fame Awards in Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

The event, organised by Athlone Show, awards nominees from the bovine, ovine and equestrian breed societies for their outstanding service to their respective breeds. The nominees have been acclaimed by their respective Breed Societies as the person who over the years has given their time, expertise and commitment for the betterment and promotion of their breed.

Mary is the long standing secretary of the Breffni Oriel Holstein Friesian Club and has made a dedicated lifetime contribution to the breed and to the success of an invigorating club outlet, serving black and white breeders in Monaghan and Cavan. This year marks Mary’s 27th year serving as Club Secretary having been elected at the AGM in 1989. In this time Mary has always been to the fore in every event organised within the club – from the establishment of the YMA (Young Members Association); hosting Expo Show in the mid-1990s; annual club tours; and herds competitions.

On the occasion of the IHFA’s 50th Anniversary in 2015, Mary was presented with a Breed Promotion Recognition Award. Mary together with her husband Paddy and daughters Denise and Andrea continue this dedication to the breed at home on their farm where the Brackvale herd of pedigree Holstein Friesians is a credit to them all. Mary is an active, dependable and progressive presence in the local community where she does a lot of voluntary work for the benefit of her fellow North Monaghan residents. All in all a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.
